About the manuscript

Voynich Manuscript, f93r. Herbal and pharmaceutical: More plants, with drawings of jars and plant parts.

The Voynich Manuscript is a handwritten, illustrated book in an unidentified script that has never been deciphered. Yale dates it to between about 1401 and 1599, perhaps from Central Europe. It has 102 parchment leaves, each about 225 × 160 mm, and almost every page has drawings in ink and coloured washes.

Yale’s record traces it from the library of Emperor Rudolph II to Athanasius Kircher, who received it in 1666. Wilfrid Voynich acquired it in 1912 from the Jesuit College at Frascati, near Rome, and H. P. Kraus gave it to the Beinecke Library in 1969, where it is Beinecke MS 408.
